Summary

Yu opera, or Yuju and Henan bangzi, is a clapper-opera tradition centered on Henan. It is not synonymous with every opera performed in Henan: Quju and Yuediao are separate traditions.

Musical characteristics

Rhythmic clapper organization, strong melodic singing and role-specific vocal expression support dramatic narratives. Eastern and western Henan vocal approaches are related but distinguishable within the collection.

Geography and communities

Henan’s towns, cities and countryside form a connected listening landscape, extending into neighboring audience networks. Zhengzhou, Luoyang and Kaifeng are examples within this landscape rather than isolated islands.

Artists

Chang Xiangyu, Ma Jinfeng, Xiao Xiangyu, Li Shujian and Hu Meiling represent different interpretive approaches and role repertories.
