Vidala

From MuGlobe.com

Summary

Vidala is an Argentine regional song field with strong northwestern and north-central relationships. Its melodic and poetic forms distinguish it from baguala, even where singers, the caja and occasions overlap. Community singing and composed or arranged concert repertory are connected but different listening contexts. [1]

Contemporary and trending

At Territorios del Canto in 2023, Nadia Larcher, Andrea Mamondes and Lorena Carpanchay sang the anonymous vidala La Vida Mía. That named collaboration provides a concrete route into continuing interpretation by women with different regional histories. [2]

History

Cuchi Leguizamón’s work shows how regional vocal resources could enter new composed songs and piano-based arrangements. INAMU’s separate Leda Valladares examples also retain local names such as Vidala riojana. Authored song and inherited repertoire should keep their individual credits. [3] [4]

Musical characteristics

Pentatonic melodic resources are characteristic in the teaching account, rather than baguala’s more restricted three-note framework. Phrase, text and rhythmic support give a performance its shape. Instrumentation varies between solo, collective and arranged versions. [1]

Geography and communities

Overlapping fields connect La Rioja–Catamarca–Tucumán with Santiago del Estero and neighbouring north-central communities. A weaker metropolitan field represents adopted concert and teaching circulation. These are musical relationships, not a boundary around one population.

Artists

Leda Valladares offers a documented Riojan example; the 2023 La Vida Mía collaboration opens another route. Composers, collectors and community singers occupy different roles, and a familiar performer’s whole catalogue is not automatically vidala. [4]
