Sundaygar Dearboy
Summary
Sundaygar Dearboy, also known as Michael Davies, is a Liberian singer and songwriter from Grand Bassa County. His music connects gbema, hipco, Afropop and gospel, using Bassa and English.[1]
Life and career
His recorded career includes music associated with Liberia's postwar public life. 'Let Us Vote Ma Ellen' supported Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's 2005 presidential campaign. Albums including Don't Live With Woman and Rebirth document a longer career that also reached audiences beyond political events.[1]
Music and style
Afrisson describes a mixture of gbema, hipco and Afropop with soukous, Caribbean and Indian musical resources. That range helps explain why his repertoire crosses dance music, religious expression and public messages. In 2020 he joined Takun J, DenG and other Liberian artists on 'Sanitize', a collective song promoting hygiene and awareness of COVID-19.[1][2]
Works and performances
Afrisson's listing for the 2007 CD Zee boyee names 'Dearboy Kay', 'Zee Boyee', 'African Politicians' and 'Anybody Can Be Somebody' among its tracks, with Afro Music and Video as label. Rebirth followed in 2012. These recordings provide examples of the varied song repertoire behind his public collaborations.[1][3]
