Summary

Sanaani song, or al-Ghina al-San’ani, is a Yemeni poetic and musical tradition named for Sana'a but known well beyond the capital. A singer's interpretation brings literary language, melody, ornament and social attention together. The repertory belongs to an extended Yemeni cultural world rather than a small heritage quarter alone. Its cultural identity comes from the expressive handling of words and musical expectation as much as from a recognizable instrumental sound.
