Summary
Prince Rogers Nelson (1958–2016) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer from Minneapolis. His music brought funk, soul, pop, rock and R&B into the influential Minneapolis Sound.[1]
Life and career
He grew up on Minneapolis's Northside and learned several instruments while still young. For You (1978) and Prince (1979) preceded the wider crossover of 1999 and Purple Rain. His career combined extensive studio work with bands and live performance rooted in the city's musical networks.[1]
Music and style
Synthesizers, drum machines, guitar and flexible vocal registers could coexist within one arrangement. James Brown, Sly Stone, Joni Mitchell and Jimi Hendrix were among his influences. The Revolution's contributions to Purple Rain show the collaborative side of an artist also capable of making elaborate recordings largely by himself.[2]
Works and performances
1999 (1982), Purple Rain (1984) and Sign o’ the Times (1987) document different stages. Several Purple Rain tracks originated in the Revolution's 1983 First Avenue performance. The film, album and tour carried the Minneapolis scene to a global public, with an influence extending to artists including Beyoncé.[2]
