Summary
Pirekua is a P'urhépecha song tradition from Michoacán, Mexico, in which language, expressive singing and community relationships are central. A performance may use solo voice, a small vocal group, strings or a larger ensemble, so one instrumental format does not define the whole field. Songs can address love, memory, local events, religion and social thought. Other P'urhépecha instrumental and dance repertories belong to the same broad cultural world without being automatically identical to pirekua. Mariachi and other Mexican ensemble traditions can share historical resources or stages while maintaining different social conventions.
