Summary

Osita Osadebe (1936–2007), also credited as Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, was a Nigerian singer and bandleader identified with Igbo highlife. His long career helped bring that regional musical identity to audiences beyond Nigeria.[1]

Life and career

From Atani, he entered the Lagos highlife scene in the late 1950s, initially singing with Stephen Ameche before becoming a bandleader. His career extended over four decades, through the success of 'Osondi Owendi' and later international recordings. He died in the United States in May 2007.[1][2]

Music and style

The label's account of Kedu America emphasizes layered percussion, horn lines informed by jazz and repeating guitar figures. These parts create an extended dance texture around the voice. His work belongs to a wider highlife history while retaining an association with Igbo language and cultural life; international circulation did not erase that identity.[2][1]

Works and performances

'Osondi Owendi' is a central reference point. Kedu America, whose title is rendered as 'Greetings from America', includes that song alongside 'Onuigbo', 'Ka-Anyi Jikota' and a long title performance. The release credits a full ensemble, including John Odagwe, Fidelis Mazua and Willie 'Pepper' Chijioke, making the musicians' collective contribution visible alongside the leader's name.[2]
