Oriental Brothers International Band
Summary
Oriental Brothers International Band is a Nigerian ensemble associated with Igbo highlife. Its layered guitar sound became prominent in the years after the Nigerian Civil War and circulated far beyond its eastern Nigerian base.[1]
History
The original group emerged in the early 1970s around Dan Satch Opara, Godwin 'Kabaka' Opara and singer Sir Warrior. Its Afrodisia recordings were followed by separations and bands led by former members. The original ensemble and those later groups therefore require distinct recording credits.[2]
Music and repertoire
Multiple guitar lines, bass and percussion form a dense melodic dance texture. Songs also addressed the musicians' social position and the hopes of the postwar period. Records traveled into Colombian sound-system culture, where new titles and adaptations became part of champeta. O Ku Ngwo Di Ochi, made with Palenque Records in 2022, revisited the ensemble's characteristic sound through new studio work.[1]
Members and collaborators
Dan Satch sustained a band under the name after Kabaka and Sir Warrior developed separate careers. Pan African Music's 2022 account also identifies longstanding percussionist Aquila and the role of Palenque founder Lucas Silva in the later project. These dated relationships should not be treated as an unchanged lineup across the entire catalogue.[1]
