Summary

Michael Jackson (1958–2009) was an American singer, songwriter and dancer whose work shaped pop through recordings, choreography and music video. His sound brought soul, funk, disco, R&B and rock into widely circulating song forms.[1][2]

Life and career

Born in Gary, Indiana, he became known as a child performer with the Jackson 5 before developing a solo career. The transition from family-group singer to solo recording artist brought increasing attention to his vocal identity and stage performance. He died on 25 June 2009.[2][1]

Music and style

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame identifies James Brown and Jackie Wilson among his influences. Off the Wall combines funk, disco and soul, while Thriller extends the mixture across pop, rock and R&B. Precise dance movement and carefully staged videos became integral to how audiences experienced the songs, influencing later performers across national boundaries.[1]

Works and performances

Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), Bad and Dangerous are major solo albums. 'Don't Stop ’Til You Get Enough', 'Billie Jean', 'Beat It' and 'Black or White' illustrate contrasting rhythmic, vocal and instrumental approaches within that repertoire. His solo induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame took place in 2001.[1]
