Lemko music

From MuGlobe.com

Summary

Lemko music is the song and performance world connected to Lemko communities, their Carpathian homeland and dispersed cultural life. Language, repertoire and community history distinguish it from a generic Polish highlander label.[1]

Contemporary and trending

Ensembles, soloists and community gatherings continue to transmit and arrange Lemko songs. Contemporary cultural work in western Poland includes language, music and dance; the tradition is living rather than confined to an abandoned homeland.[2]

History

Displacement and resettlement made the geography discontinuous. Homeland memory, family networks and later cultural organisation connect the Low Beskids with western communities. These relationships cannot be represented by one mountain-centred circle alone.[1]

Musical characteristics

Solo and ensemble song, dance music and modern arrangements coexist. Different performers can interpret the same work; an arranged concert song and community dance set retain their different performance contexts.

Geography and communities

Separate fields recognise the Carpathian landscape, Lower Silesian communities and the western Lemko Tower circuit. Their approximate footprints are cultural connections, not census maps or assertions that every local resident is Lemko.

Artists

Julia Doszna, Serencza, Lemko Tower and Kyczera offer several entrances. An identified Lemko work performed by Igor Herbut and orchestra represents a particular contemporary interpretation, not all of that singer’s repertoire.
