Summary
Imarhan is an Algerian Tuareg group based in Tamanrasset. Its music connects Tuareg guitar and Tamasheq poetry with funk, psychedelic rock and wider African rhythmic resources.[1]
Contemporary and trending
The group's fourth album, Essam, recorded at its Aboogi Studio in Tamanrasset, extends that approach through electronic textures and more expansive production. The band's account presents the record as an experiment within Tuareg cultural expression, rather than a departure from that heritage.[1]
History
Working together since 2006, Imarhan developed in the assouf world associated internationally with Tinariwen. Touring and recording brought exchanges with musicians outside that scene, while the Tamanrasset studio provided a home base for new work.[1]
Music and repertoire
The band's biography explicitly names funk and psychedelic rock alongside Tuareg poetry and rhythms. Its importance here lies in showing how the genre can change its instrumentation and production while retaining a specific language and cultural setting. Guitar-centered performances and the newer electronic approach offer complementary listening routes.[1]

Members and collaborators
Singer and guitarist Iyad Moussa Ben Abderahmane, known as Sadam, fronts the group. Documented collaborators include Gruff Rhys and Howe Gelb; their appearances are part of Imarhan's cross-scene exchanges rather than a definition of every recording.[1]
