Summary

Ikokou is a Punu social song-and-dance repertoire associated with southern Gabon and related Congo border communities. Participation by women and men, rhythmic movement and percussion belong to its documented social performance. It is one named repertoire within a much wider Punu musical world. [1]

History

Moudjalou’s 2013 study documents heritage across Dola and Niari and the broader Ngounié–Nyanga area. It places musical knowledge within cross-border community relationships and concerns about transmission. His proposed festival is a safeguarding project, distinct from evidence that all planned events subsequently occurred. [1]

Musical characteristics

Singing, percussion and embodied rhythmic exchange support mixed social dance. Moudjalou describes articulate hip movement and documents dancers with percussionists.
