Hiragasy

From MuGlobe.com
Category: Genre

Summary

Malagasy central-highland performance combining multipart song, instrumental playing, dance and kabary oratory in community/troupe presentation. [1] [2] [3]

Contemporary and trending

Community troupes, public competitions and celebrations connect rural work calendars with urban audiences. The 2023 heritage inscription recognizes a living performance institution rather than a national listening rank. [2] [3]

History

Hiragasy developed through changing highland social and political settings. Competing early origin accounts should remain attributed; later instrumental and public transformations are part of its history. [1]

Musical characteristics

Multipart singing, instrumental ensemble, dance and kabary oratory form an extended performance. Speech and musical interaction address a gathered public; an isolated song represents only part of the event. [1]

Geography and communities

Central highlands and connected village–Antananarivo performance circuits. Regional celebrations, public competitions and specific national/diaspora cultural contexts. [1] [2] [3]

Artists

Troupe leaders, singers, instrumentalists, dancers and orators work collectively. Their village–Antananarivo connections are essential to understanding performance beyond a list of urban solo artists. [3]

Bà gasy shares highland cultural histories but a different song and compositional practice. Salegy has a northern popular-dance foundation rather than Hiragasy’s institutional form. [35]

Hotspot mushrooms

Central highlands and connected village–Antananarivo performance circuits. Regional celebrations, public competitions and specific national/diaspora cultural contexts. Fields distinguish the community heartland from specifically documented wider use; political borders and population totals do not determine intensity.

The fields express editorial judgments about relative musical affinity and reach, not measured audience shares. Radius is the zero edge of a linear fade; same-genre overlaps combine by maximum.
