Summary

Gagok is a Korean cultivated vocal tradition in which carefully shaped songs unfold with a small instrumental ensemble. In this article the term refers to the inherited lyric-song cycles, not to every modern Korean art song that may also be called gagok. Its spacious phrasing, sustained tones and finely coordinated accompaniment create an intimate but demanding musical world. Gagok is related to sijo and gasa within the wider world of cultivated Korean vocal music, but their forms and treatment of text differ. It is distinct from pansori's dramatic narrative and from regional minyo, although concert programs may present them together.
