Forró pé-de-serra

Summary

Forró pé-de-serra names an acoustic-centred performance tradition and social-dance world within Forró. Accordion, zabumba and triangle are emblematic, while rabeca, pífano, voices and other additions complicate any rule that only a three-piece ensemble belongs. It encompasses several rhythms rather than one exclusive beat.

Present practice includes recurring dance gatherings and new arrangements of familiar repertoire. History

The familiar sound draws on northeastern repertoires, mid-century recording and broadcasting, and migrant-built urban institutions. São Paulo was itself a centre of production: Castanheiro worked with Pedro Sertanejo and subsequent generations, rather than simply receiving finished music from the Northeast.

Musical characteristics

The accordion can lead melody and harmony while differentiated zabumba strokes and triangle articulation provide a danceable foundation. Baião, Xote brasileiro and Arrasta-pé retain different rhythmic identities within that ensemble world. Instrumentation describes a performance approach; an artist can move between it and electronic arrangements.

Geography and communities
