Arrasta-pé

From MuGlobe.com

Summary

Arrasta-pé is a named rhythmic and dance repertoire within the traditional Forró universe. The expression can also be used more loosely for a dance gathering. This entry concerns the musical form; the wider social occasion remains part of the Forró overview. [1]

Contemporary and trending

The repertoire continues in acoustic performances and June-festival contexts rather than existing only as a historical label. The IMS Castanheiro/Forró das Minas programme includes an explicitly named arrasta-pé piece in a contemporary intergenerational concert. [2]

History

Arrasta-pé belongs among the inherited forms documented in the Iphan registration of forró’s traditional matrices. Inclusion in that family establishes continuity and association, not a single date or exclusive town of invention. [3]

Musical characteristics

Its brisk dance character and march-like rhythmic organization distinguish it from the more relaxed partnered xote and the syncopated baião reference. Accordion and percussion arrangements are common within forró ensembles, while arrangement and local terminology can vary. [4]

Geography and communities

The interpretation gives strongest continuity to northeastern interior and Agreste repertories, with lighter southeastern and Brasília dance networks. Because arrasta-pé is one constituent of mixed sets, its broad recognition does not justify making it as strong everywhere as the entire Forró family. [1] [5]

Artists

The Castanheiro and Forró das Minas programme is one documented present-day example. The form is a shared repertory resource rather than the property of a single band; named ensemble traditions and dance contexts are more informative than an exclusive artist list. [2]
