Summary

Femi Kuti is a Nigerian singer, saxophonist, composer and bandleader whose music develops the Afrobeat lineage of his father, Fela Kuti. His band, Positive Force, is a distinct performing institution within that continuing history.[1]

Contemporary and trending

Journey Through Life (2025) places reflections on family and personal experience beside political criticism. Femi composed, arranged and produced the album, recording at the Kuti family's Legacy Plus studios in Nigeria.[2]

Life and career

Born in London and raised in Lagos, he began his professional musical life in his father's ensemble before forming his own band. The inherited setting gave him practical experience of Afrobeat as a working music, while Positive Force provided space to develop his own repertoire and performance identity.[1]

Music and style

His music connects Afrobeat with jazz, funk, highlife and Nigerian rhythmic resources. Political commentary remains prominent, but the later album's inward-looking themes demonstrate that the tradition can also carry private reflection. The relationship to Fela is an influence and a shared cultural setting, rather than an explanation that makes their entire catalogues interchangeable.[1][2]

Works and performances

'After 24 Years' introduces Journey Through Life, while 'One People One World' and 'Politics Don Expose Them' provide other entry points into his recorded public address. Compare the horn writing, vocal phrasing and ensemble momentum across these works.[2]
