Summary

Dohori is a Nepali dialogic song tradition in which performers exchange improvised poetic lines within a shared musical frame. The name points toward two sides, but the social possibilities are wider than a fixed male-versus-female courtship contest. Wit, affection, challenge and commentary can all enter the exchange. Musical memory and quick verbal judgment work together: a familiar tune supports new lines shaped in response to another person. Other Nepali folk and popular genres share performers and media without becoming interchangeable with dohori.
