Daddy Lumba
Summary
Daddy Lumba (1964–2025), born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, was a Ghanaian singer, songwriter and producer associated with highlife. His recordings and collaborations connected audiences in Ghana with the experience of Ghanaians abroad.[1]
Life and career
His early work included the Nkwanta Wesley Singers and school music-making. In Germany he partnered with Nana Acheampong as the Lumba Brothers. Their debut recording reached release in 1989; Obi Ate Meso Buo followed as a solo album in 1990. He died on 26 July 2025.[1][2]
Music and style
Highlife songwriting, a recognizable vocal delivery and attention to personal experience underpin his musical identity. His influence also operated through producing and supporting other singers: the official biography identifies work with Felix Owusu and Ofori Amponsah among those relationships. Ghana's culture ministry subsequently emphasized both his melodies and his distinctive lyrical expression when describing his impact on later generations.[3]
Works and performances
Obi Ate Meso Buo, Aben Wo Ha, Wo Ho Kyere and Ofon Na Edi Asem Fo offer routes into different periods. The official biography dates the last of these to December 2022 and credits a renewed collaboration with Kweku Mensah. His discography includes partnerships as well as solo releases, so individual recording credits remain significant.[2]
