Calipso de El Callao
Summary
El Callao calipso is a Guayana musical identity rooted in Antillean-connected community and carnival life in Venezuela. Comparsas, voices, percussion and dance make it more specific than a national cover version of Trinidadian calypso. [1]
Contemporary and trending
The May 2026 Calipso de El Callao project programme brought comparsa practitioners to Caracas after exchange in England. Luzmira Zerpa and Samuel Jones organized the project with the Fundación Oswaldo Lares and Falmouth University. Workshops and discussions addressed transmission as well as concert presentation. [2]
History
Migration and the gold-mining world connected El Callao with Caribbean communities. The carnival includes madamas, miners and other characters carrying social memory. UNESCO inscribed the carnival in 2016; that should not be misstated as a separate inscription of the musical genre alone. [1]
Musical characteristics
Bumbac, other drums, cuatro and percussion support songs, with electric guitar and bass also appearing in arrangements. The inventory describes English, Spanish and patois-associated repertory, ranging across satire, criticism and affection. Ensemble and language choices vary across comparsas. [3]
Geography and communities
The main field concentrates on El Callao and connected eastern Bolívar communities. A weaker Guayana urban continuation represents wider circulation. A concert in Caracas or England does not automatically create an equally strong origin field.

The 2026 programme identifies Montserat Monsanto, Kenton St. Bernard and colleagues from Family Ground, Nueva Generación de Isidora and Las Tres Rosas, among others. Their distinct community roles and schools matter alongside individual stage careers. [2]
