Summary

Angklung music uses shaken bamboo instruments, often with each player contributing particular pitches to a shared melody. Its Sundanese roots coexist with educational orchestras and national and international performance.[1]

Contemporary and trending

Community performance, school ensembles and interactive concerts keep collective playing visible. Saung Angklung Udjo presents both ensemble arrangements and participatory music-making.

History

The practice has connections with agricultural and life-cycle ceremonies. Later educational and concert settings extended the repertoire without making the older contexts interchangeable with the modern orchestra.

Musical characteristics

Bamboo frames and tubes produce a ringing, rattling tone when shaken. Coordinated entries allow many players to make one phrase; instrumental tuning and arrangement determine the available repertoire.

Geography and communities

West Java is the principal field in this first map pass. Wider Indonesian circulation is recognized without painting every island as an equally strong local tradition.

Artists

Udjo Ngalagena’s Saung Angklung Udjo is a prominent teaching and performance institution. Its performances of familiar melodies demonstrate ensemble coordination as well as the instrument’s timbre.

Related genres

Sundanese gamelan; Jaipongan.
