Jota.pê
Summary
Jota.pê is a Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist whose work spans contemporary Brazilian song and a long-standing relationship with Forró. He performs with Bruna Black as Àvuà and joined João Gomes and Mestrinho for Dominguinho.[1][2]
Life and career
In a 2025 interview, Jota.pê explained that a forró-school community supported his early shows and helped him sustain the beginning of his career. He subsequently composed in xote and baião as well as other forms. This history is more specific than presenting him as an outsider who first encountered forró through a high-profile collaboration.[2]
Music and style
Voice and guitar provide a flexible foundation for his songwriting and ensemble work. In Dominguinho, his singing meets Gomes's lower vocal presence and Mestrinho's accordion. The collaboration draws on shared enjoyment of songs and the musicians' ability to work out arrangements together; it does not collapse their individual catalogues into one genre.
Works and performances
Se o Meu Peito Fosse o Mundo offers a route into his solo work; the official live performance credits a larger ensemble of wind and rhythm players around voice and guitar. Dominguinho presents a different, forró-centered setting. Its name refers both to a Sunday atmosphere and to Dominguinhos. These projects can be heard side by side without treating MPB and forró as mutually exclusive identities.[1][2]
