Summary

Drizilik, born Benjamin Menelik George, is a Sierra Leonean rapper and vocalist associated with Freetown's contemporary popular scene. His music brings hip-hop, Afrobeats, dancehall and local musical resources into conversation.[1]

Life and career

He began performing covers with Freetown Uncut in 2012 and made mixtapes alongside live work. 'Pop Collar' brought wider attention in 2015. In a 2020 interview he described gradually improving a home studio and working within a small music industry. His account emphasizes the shared momentum of a generation of Freetown musicians, rather than an isolated breakthrough.[1]

Music and style

His delivery moves between Krio and English. Describing the period around 'Pop Collar', he recalled simpler production and slower tempos as part of his cohort's approach. Work with producer DJ Rampage connects this pop language with Sierra Leonean rhythmic resources, including bubu. The collaboration makes local musical identity audible within internationally circulating beat styles.[1][2]

Works and performances

Shukubly (2018) and Ashobi (2022) document the development of that sound. DJ Rampage produced music for both, including 'Ashobi', 'Hype', 'Fana Makit' and 'Awujo'. The title song 'Ashobi' pairs Drizilik with Idris Elba, extending the Freetown collaboration into a diasporic exchange.[2]
