Summary
Takun J, born Jonathan Koffa, is a Liberian rapper, singer and activist from Monrovia. A prominent practitioner of Hipco, he uses the colloquial language of streets and markets to address everyday experience and public concerns.[1]
Life and career
His early interests included dance and talent shows. Living through civil war and displacement shaped the setting in which he pursued music. His official biography lists the singles 'We'll Spay You' (2005) and 'You Meaning Me' (2006), followed by the album The Time in 2007. Jazzo Entertainment became a vehicle for developing and sharing his work.[1]
Music and style
His hipco links hip-hop with Liberian speech and locally recognizable situations. Songs about corruption, unity and hardship connect musical entertainment with civic participation. That social role also extends to mentoring other artists through the Hipco Accountability Network, where writing and recording are treated as ways to reach people beyond formal political debate.[1][2]
Works and performances
'Police Man', from The Time, addresses police corruption. 'It Not Right' features Luckay Buckay. In 2020 he joined Amaze Yor, Sundaygar Dearboy, DenG, Soul Smiter, Odemz and TanTan on 'Sanitize', a public-health collaboration encouraging practical precautions against COVID-19. Together these recordings show the range of his socially engaged musical work.[1][2][3]
