Summary
Amakye Dede is a Ghanaian singer and bandleader associated with highlife. Also known as Abrantee and Iron Boy, he developed a career with the Apollo High Kings that reached audiences in Ghana, Nigeria and overseas.[1]
Life and career
From Agogo, he joined Akwasi Ampofo Agyei's Kumapem Royals as a vocalist in 1973 and began composing within that guitar-band setting. Work in Nigeria preceded a renewed Ghanaian profile through 'Kose Kose' in 1987. The Apollo High Kings provided the ensemble behind much of his subsequent recording and touring.[1]
Music and style
His music combines highlife with reggae influences and dance-band arrangements. Songs often turn toward reassurance, reflection and the value of relationships. The resulting sound links the guitar-band apprenticeship to a broader Afro-Caribbean popular vocabulary. The 2004 profile identifies Bebrebe Yi as a particularly explicit example of that exchange.[1]
Works and performances
Kose Kose, Odo Nfoni, Dabi Dabi, Bebrebe Yi and Iron Boy mark successive points in the catalogue. Live releases from Düsseldorf document the overseas performance circuit.[1] He also performed at the 2025 public memorial for Daddy Lumba, a later example of his place within Ghana's highlife community.[2]
