Summary
The Jackson 5 is the American family vocal group that brought Michael Jackson and his brothers to a wide public. Its early recordings combine Motown soul, R&B and pop, with carefully coordinated singing and movement.[1]
History
The brothers came from Gary, Indiana. Bobby Taylor brought them to Motown's attention in 1968; Diana Ross helped introduce them publicly in Los Angeles the following year. The success of 'I Want You Back' began a run of widely heard singles and television appearances.[1]
Music and repertoire
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes their sound as drawing on vocal groups, contemporary R&B and classic Motown. Young lead singing and tightly shaped backing parts gave those resources a distinctive presentation. 'I Want You Back', 'ABC', 'The Love You Save' and 'I'll Be There' were the group's first four chart-topping releases.[2][1]
Members and collaborators
The Motown lineup comprised Michael, Jermaine, Marlon, Jackie and Tito Jackson. The Corporation writing and production team helped shape the early records. The brothers' ensemble discipline, alongside label collaborators and arrangers, was integral to the group's identity; the later solo careers grew from that collective work.[1]
