Summary

Estonian contemporary folk reworks traditional song, acoustic instruments and regional language in newly arranged songs and performance projects. It is distinct from treating every arrangement as unchanged regilaul or Seto leelo.

Contemporary and trending

Duo Ruut, Puuluup and other groups place older sounds in contemporary concerts and recordings. Acoustic songwriting, looping and band arrangements coexist.[1]

History

Folk revival and festival networks connect archives and community transmission with newly authored compositions and arrangements.[2][3][4]

Musical characteristics

Kannel, bowed lyre, voice, fiddle, guitar and percussion may combine with loops or amplification. Some works draw on runic-song repetition; others use modern song forms.

Geography and communities

Viljandi is an important meeting point, while Tallinn, Tartu and southern communities connect performers, festivals and listeners nationally. Regional source traditions retain their separate geography.

Artists

Trad.Attack!, Puuluup, Duo Ruut, Curly Strings, Mari Kalkun and Zetod illustrate distinct approaches; a Seto-inspired band recording is not automatically traditional leelo.
