Summary

Chaozhou string music, also called Teochew string music or xianshi, is an instrumental ensemble tradition associated with eastern Guangdong. It is distinct from Cantonese instrumental music, Chaozhou opera and Fujian Nanyin.

Contemporary and trending

Community associations and migration carry the repertoire beyond Chaoshan. The listening collection retains ensemble identification where available and treats different recordings of a named tune as versions, not newly composed works.[1]

History

Musical characteristics

Bowed and plucked strings share a melodic framework with ornamental variation. The route concentrates on string music; large gong-and-drum repertory is a related but separate sound.

Geography and communities

Chaozhou, Shantou, Jieyang and their connected hinterlands form the principal landscape. Hong Kong and Southeast Asian associations represent separated community networks rather than continuous geographic extension.

Artists

Named community ensembles and credited instrumentalists are preferred; where a source does not identify the musicians, the catalogue says so instead of assigning the uploader as performer.

Recording entrances

吴灶兴; 李培涛 — 潮州弦诗乐《双狮戏球》 领奏吴灶兴 司鼓李培涛[3]; 精艺阁 — 潮州弦诗乐《过江龙》精艺阁即兴合乐[4]. These are particular versions, not a claim that every work by the same performer belongs here.

Related genres

Hakka mountain song; Cantonese instrumental music; Nanyin; Cantopop.
