Summary

Francis Kodzo Nuatro was a Ghanaian composer, dancer and ensemble organizer important to the development of Borborbor. His reputation is particularly associated with Kpando and the Ewedome musical communities of the Volta Region.[1]

Life and career

Accounts place his formative work in the mid-twentieth century. A former policeman, he assembled performers and helped develop their repertoire and instruments. Research also traces his activity to teaching and participation in a konkoma band at Wusuta before later work in Kpando. These connected histories are more informative than assigning the whole genre to a single act of invention.[2]

Music and style

His contribution involved composition, dance and the organization of a collective percussion-and-song practice. The Ghana News Agency account describes marching, slow-highlife and hot-highlife rhythmic modes. Instruments could cue changes while choreography and singing gave the performance its shared shape. Later brass additions should not be projected onto every early ensemble.[1]

Works and performances

His repertoire included patriotic songs associated with Kwame Nkrumah and public occasions. Remembrance by drummers and relatives emphasizes teaching, competitions and the spread of the ensemble practice to neighboring communities. His legacy therefore includes the transmission of Borborbor through local groups, beyond an individual commercial discography.[1]
