Summary

Legon Palmwine Band is a Ghanaian ensemble associated with the University of Ghana's Legon music community. It develops palm-wine music through contemporary performance, drawing on the tradition associated with Koo Nimo.[1]

History

The group emerged from university music-making in the mid-2010s. Its members' experiments alongside the Legon Highlife Ensemble developed into a separate band, as described in Eric Sunu Doe's research. Live appearances subsequently extended its reach beyond the campus.[2]

Music and repertoire

Fingerpicked guitar, percussion, Akan storytelling and vocal harmony shape the ensemble's interpretation of inherited music. This approach places revival inside ongoing composition and performance. Legon Abrabɔ, released in 2020, takes university life as its title; the later single 'Ɛtoɔ' addresses tax. The biography also documents an appearance at the 2022 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.[1]

Members and collaborators

The published lineup names Samuel Agyeman Boahen on guitar and voice, Edwin Akwei Brown on percussion, Seth Kpodo on voice and frikyiwa, Albert Owusu Brown on voice, shakers and premprensiwa, and Eric Sunu Doe on guitar, voice and premprensiwa. These are the personnel documented in that account, rather than an assurance about every later performance.[1]
