Summary
Obrafour, born Michael Kwabena Okyere Darko, is a Ghanaian rapper whose Twi storytelling became a major reference point for hiplife. His music connects verbal craft, memorable melody and commentary on social conduct.[1]
Life and career
From Kwahu, he grew up with his mother's singing and church hymns. School singing and neighborhood freestyle sessions preceded professional recording. His debut album Pae Mu Ka appeared in 1999 and began a consequential creative association with Hammer of the Last Two.[1]
Music and style
Poetic Twi, wit and melodic phrasing help his rap address several generations of listeners. Pae Mu Ka treats motherhood, history, love, work and moral behavior within a hip-hop setting. Its relationship to the audience for highlife is part of its significance: familiar expressive resources and a younger popular idiom meet in the same songs.[1]
Works and performances
'Pae Mu Ka', 'Agoro No Aso', 'Kwame Nkrumah' and 'Yaanom' are entry points into the debut. A retrospective marking its twentieth anniversary emphasizes the strength of the album's lyrical writing and its sustained place in Ghanaian rap memory. The production partnership also makes the record a useful introduction to the collaborative work behind hiplife.[2]
