Summary
Banning Eyre is an American guitarist, writer and producer whose work connects performance with the study of African guitar traditions. His collaborations include Thomas Mapfumo and musicians working in several distinct West and Central African styles.[1]
Life and career
Professional guitar work began in the 1970s. Later experience included Congolese dance bands in Boston, West African acoustic ensembles and collaborations in New York. His work with Afropop Worldwide developed alongside travel, research and sustained musical learning. The ensemble Timbila grew from his engagement with Zimbabwean and Mozambican resources.[1]
Music and style
His musical education encompasses jazz, flamenco, reggae and rock, followed by close study of African guitar approaches. Work with Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited connects him with Chimurenga and mbira-related guitar language. His solo pieces draw on this accumulated listening and playing through fingerpicked melodies, repeating figures and original arrangements.[1][2]
Works and performances
Bare Songs, Vol. 1 gathers original compositions and a version of the traditional Mande piece 'Lamban'. Voyagers' Chasing Light features Yacouba Sissoko on kora and Edith Lettner on saxophone. His writing includes In Griot Time, Lion Songs and Guitar Atlas: Africa, extending the relationship between practical musicianship and musical documentation.[2][1]
