Summary

Jagwa Music is a Dar es Salaam ensemble associated with mchiriku, a Tanzanian urban dance music built from percussion, amplified miniature keyboards, singing and dancing.[1]

History

The group began in the early 1990s and developed through neighborhood party performance. The 2012 album Bongo Hotheads carried that practice to record listeners; its production credits connect the release with Crammed Discs and mixer Vincent Kenis.[2]

Music and repertoire

Dense interlocking percussion meets the rough amplified sound of the kinanda, a small Casio keyboard. Fixed patterns can give way to faster dance passages. The music draws on coastal Tanzanian resources including taarab, chakacha and Zaramo rhythms; those relationships are more specific than describing it simply as African electronic music. Lyrics turn everyday work, conflict, romance and neighborhood conversation into public performance. Center Stage documents the circulation of song phrases on local bus taxis, a concrete form of influence within the city's everyday language.[1][2]

Members and collaborators

Center Stage's 2016 touring credits identify Jackson Aluta Kazimoto on lead vocals and Festo Epimacky Mateo, known as Dongo, on kinanda, alongside drummers and dancers. That dated lineup describes the documented tour; it should not be read as a permanent personnel list for every Jagwa performance.[1]
