Cachimbo
Summary
Cachimbo is a distinct music-and-couple-dance practice of Tarapacá’s oasis and valley communities, including Pica, Matilla, Mamiña and Tarapacá. It shares festive space with cueca nortina and huayno but has its own movement, phrase knowledge and community identity. [1]
Contemporary and trending
Pica’s June 2026 community gathering brought together older and younger dancers and several local clubs, including Taconaso, Piqueños por Siempre and Danza Pasión y Arena. Family learning and community organizations remain central alongside public presentations. [2]
History
The first place, occasion and creators cannot be securely established from the heritage record. Older descriptions use the name baile y tierra. Changing instruments and festive contexts show continuity through transformation rather than an unchanged historical specimen. [1] [3]
Musical characteristics
The dance’s three broad sections culminate in toreo, with expressive approaches, retreats and turns. Low, gliding steps distinguish it from a generic stamping dance. Lakita and brass ensembles can accompany it, while earlier accounts include strings and piano. Practitioners emphasize the bombo’s rhythmic character. [3] [1]
Geography and communities
A concentrated but connected Tarapacá oasis field joins inland communities; a weaker Iquique coastal field represents regional transmission. The narrow focus preserves a consequential local identity instead of spreading it uniformly across northern Chile.
Artists
Jorge Alberto Moya Riveros’s family practice and Matilla club provide one documented transmission route. The selected Las Heladas video is shared by dancer Gabriela Caqueo and identifies her and Pablo Caqueo in Matilla; its accompanying musicians are not credited in the available metadata. [4]

Related genres
Cueca, Huayno and Sikuri connect neighbouring musical worlds. Cachimbo remains separate; sharing an ensemble, festival or northern location is not enough to identify the dance.
