Salsa choke
Summary
Salsa choke is a Colombian Pacific urban music-and-dance field shaped by electronic production, voices and collective dance practice. Its Tumaco–Cali connections and local production networks make it a specific identity rather than a spelling variant for salsa generally. [1]
Contemporary and trending
The 2024 COP16 programme names Cero Copeo and Los Chumidays in salsa choke programming. Research in Aguablanca examines producers, studios and collaborators whose work sustains the music beyond a single viral song. These dated observations do not imply an unverified 2026 chart position. [2] [3]
History
Sánchez’s field research records Tumaco musicians’ accounts of local development and the different promotional resources available in Cali. Ras Tas Tas and football celebrations widened visibility in 2014, but that exposure did not create the whole tradition. The account distinguishes production, circulation and recognition instead of awarding one city sole ownership. [1]
Musical characteristics
The production study identifies the characteristic látigo rhythmic sequence while stressing that a preset alone does not make a successful track. Arrangement, vocal delivery, technical production and collaborative decisions give recordings their character; dance and audiovisual circulation are part of the wider musical work. [3]
Geography and communities
Two strong connected fields represent Cali–Valle production and the Tumaco–Buenaventura coastal network. They overlap across southwestern Colombia, acknowledging migration and exchange without erasing Tumaco’s local speech and identity. [1]
Artists
Cali Flow Latino supplies the widely circulated Ras Tas Tas gateway. Cero Copeo and Los Chumidays illustrate other public programming, while the research documents the often less-visible labour of producers, dancers and studio collaborators. [1] [2] [3]

Related genres
Salsa, Reggaeton and Currulao are useful comparisons, with different histories and performance settings. Chirimía chocoana is another Pacific identity. The relationship is one of exchange, not a formula claiming that adding two older genres mechanically creates salsa choke.
