Summary

Zokela is a Central African popular music-and-dance field associated with the ensemble of that name and its transformation of Lobaye musical resources. Band and style are related but not identical categories. Guitar-based popular performance connects local social-dance foundations with a wider Bangui and national public. [1] [2]

Contemporary and trending

The 2020 AFP report observes Zokela performing in Bangui and records founder Saint-Pierre Dibaba Alagomme’s account of revitalizing Motenguene dance. It also includes dancers and cultural intermediaries. That dated working practice is stronger evidence of continuity than an account confined to an old foreign collection, while leaving the exact 2026 audience balance open. [2]

History

Late-twentieth-century development joined the guitar-band world of Bangui with more explicit Lobaye social and ceremonial resources. Luke Fowlie describes changing ensemble presentation and social commentary. The account is useful for musical relationships without importing its incidental chronological or ethnographic errors into a definitive national history. [1]

Musical characteristics

Interlocking guitar lines, bass, percussion and vocals adapt resources associated with local ensemble and dance practice. Fowlie describes guitar treatment of contrasting instrumental registers, while the practitioner report foregrounds the relationship with Motenguene movement. This is musical reworking, not simply an unaltered ceremonial repertoire on electric instruments. [1] [2]

Geography and communities

Lobaye and Bangui form a connected regional landscape: inherited practice and modern public performance should not be separated into an untouched countryside and an unrelated city. Lower wider Central African circulation is represented separately. The music’s national identity does not make it the only repertoire in the country. [1] [2]

Artists

Saint-Pierre Dibaba Alagomme and the Zokela ensemble are named practitioners in AFP’s report. Dancers and accompanists are part of the creative field as well. A band-centered origin story should not obscure those roles or imply that every later use of the style involves the same lineup. [2]

Congolese Rumba and Soukous belong to the wider regional popular-band history. Aka/BaAka musical resources have a different community context whose presence in modern performance requires careful description. Shared motifs do not merge all Lobaye or Central African music into Zokela. [1]
