Waza denotes both gourd-trumpet instruments and the coordinated ensemble repertoire of Berta communities in the Sudan–Ethiopia borderlands. This entry concerns that musical practice. History

Timkehet Teffera's 2023 chapter is based on 2005 fieldwork near Assosa in western Ethiopia. It documents a transmitted craft and ensemble practice across a borderland rather than the origin of a national genre at one city. Earlier Blue Nile documentation and the later inventory provide other observations; their different dates and locations should remain explicit. [2] [1]

Musical characteristics

Differently sized and tuned end-blown gourd trumpets contribute distinct parts to a larger pattern. The interdependence is commonly described as hocket: a musical line or texture emerges through coordination among players. Teffera's abstract and the Sudanese inventory report different ensemble sizes, so an exact universal instrument count would be misleading. The inventory's loose “flute” terminology does not override the scholar's trumpet classification. [2] [1]

Geography and communities

One broad field crosses the Blue Nile–Benishangul borderland, including the Assosa-connected Berta practice documented directly by Teffera. The map follows evidence of shared musical practice, rather than extending over every neighboring language community. The Ethiopian village called Gambella in the fieldwork should not be confused with a claim that all of Gambella Regional State is a Waza heartland. [2]

Artists

Ensemble players, instrument makers and community custodians maintain the repertoire together. Hussein Abbas is a named practitioner in the Ginais reporting. The instrument maker's choice and cultivation of gourds and the coordinated knowledge of the players are musical expertise, even where authorship is not expressed through a named composer or commercial recording artist. Berta flute-drum and lyre practices and neighboring Ingessana repertoires require distinct identification. They should not be renamed Waza merely because an archive presents them together. Beja music and Nubian song offer other northeastern African comparisons, but shared instrumental or regional descriptions do not establish a single genre. [24]
