Summary

Toubou lute music denotes the plucked-lute repertoire known through such instrument names as Teda keleli and Daza cegeni, also transcribed tchegueni. It is a repertoire category within the larger musical worlds of Toubou communities, not a name for every Toubou song, drum ensemble or dance. Catherine Baroin's comparative ethnography distinguishes local names and practices, including a Kreda terminology exception. [1]

Contemporary and trending

Baroin documents changes in materials, urban performance settings and repertoire rather than an unchanging pastoral survival. More recently, Niger's 2024 Toubou cultural-day reporting identifies the tchegueni alongside distinct drum practices. These sources show continuity and public recognition across different settings; the festival announcement does not measure everyday listening or establish that all regional variants have converged. [1] [2]

History

The Toubou world crosses today's Chad, Niger and Libya borders. The lute's history belongs to movement within this connected landscape as well as to local social life. Baroin's study builds on earlier fieldwork while asking how urbanization and new materials changed the instrument and its uses. Its comparative method is a reason to distinguish Toubou practice from neighboring Saharan traditions rather than fold them into one desert sound. [1]

Musical characteristics

The small skin-faced plucked lute generally has two principal strings, with some variants using a third. Its relatively intimate sound supports recognizable melodic repertories and relationships with words. The bowed instrument and communal drumming belong to related but distinct practices. The term “guitar” in recent journalistic description is therefore best understood as an accessible comparison, not a precise organological classification. [1] [2]

Geography and communities

The fields follow connected Toubou musical territory through Tibesti/Borkou, the eastern Niger–Chadian Daza sphere and the southern Libyan/Fezzan connection. Overlap expresses continuity without claiming identical practice everywhere between the centers. Accounts of Toubou women and performance in Libya also warn against treating one instrument's customary player roles as rules for the entire musical culture. [2] [3]

Artists

The primary social unit is the local player and knowledgeable audience, not necessarily a nationally marketed star. This entry therefore foregrounds repertoire-bearing communities. The historical ethnography and recent cultural-day account document different forms of recognition; neither provides a defensible contemporary celebrity ranking. [1] [2]

Tuareg imzad, Tuareg guitar and Hassaniya Azawan provide Saharan comparisons, but their instruments, social roles and musical histories differ. Toubou lute music is a separate category. Within the Toubou world, nagara and kidi drumming should remain identifiable rather than be silently absorbed into this lute entry. [1] [2]

Hotspot mushrooms

A connected cross-border Teda/Daza lute repertoire, not an all-Sahara field. Three overlapping regional fields follow the documented northern Chad, Niger and southern Libya connections; low-density land does not mean an absent musical culture.

The fields express editorial judgments about relative musical affinity and reach, not measured audience shares. Radius is the zero edge of a linear fade; same-genre overlaps combine by maximum.
