Makishi musical performance
Summary
Makishi musical performance comprises vocal, percussion and dance repertories through which particular spirit manifestations become audible and socially present. The entry concerns music within these institutions, not the entire masquerade or initiation system. Jason Winikoff’s research emphasizes sound, timbre and enacted personality rather than treating a mask alone as the defining object. [1]
Contemporary and trending
Community ceremonial practice and urban performance ensembles both sustain this music. UNESCO safeguarding documentation describes participating northwestern Zambian communities and transmission concerns. [2] Public staging should not be taken to mean that every associated ceremony is open to spectators, or that a concert reproduces the full social setting of initiation.
History
Luvale, Luchazi, Chokwe and Mbunda communities share related musical resources across western and northwestern Zambia and connected neighboring areas. These relationships have distinct local histories. [3] Modern documentation and safeguarding make selected practices more visible; they are not the beginning of a repertoire, nor proof that one community’s version represents all others.
Musical characteristics
Winikoff’s analysis of Luchazi mungongi describes interlocking support percussion, a timeline and an improvising lead drum. Mungongi has particular relationships to Chizaluke and ceremonial movement; it is one repertoire within the wider field. [3] His broader work treats vocal and instrumental timbre as part of how manifestations are recognized, making sonic character more than decoration around a dance. [1]
Geography and communities
Northwestern Zambia and adjoining eastern Angola form a connected core, with western Zambia and urban migrant ensembles supplying related settings. Winikoff worked with groups in Zambezi, Mongu and Lusaka and describes wider regional relationships. [3] The map distinguishes the larger community landscape from lighter urban performance circulation; it does not color all Zambia as equally involved.
Artists
Documented collaborators include Lenga Navo in Zambezi, Chota in Kabwata, Likumbi Lya Mize Chibolya in Lusaka, and Likumbi Lya Mize Western Province Mongu. [3] Naming ensembles acknowledges collective expertise. The musical work also depends on specialists, dancers and community relationships beyond a commercial artist roster.

Kalela, Budima and Mooba are other Zambian performance traditions with distinct communities and institutions. They should not be merged because each includes music and dance. The musical scope here follows ethnographic analysis and community safeguarding evidence, while respecting the difference between public repertory descriptions and the broader knowledge of initiated participants. Hotspot mushrooms
A northwestern Zambia–eastern Angola core connects participating communities, with an overlapping western Zambia continuation and a lighter Lusaka migrant-performance field. The map concerns documented musical practice rather than jurisdiction over ritual knowledge.
The fields express editorial judgments about relative musical affinity and reach, not measured audience shares. Radius is the zero edge of a linear fade; same-genre overlaps combine by maximum.
