Summary

Lebanese zajal is a field of recited or sung vernacular poetry in which verbal invention, musical delivery and public response create a shared performance. It can be an individual utterance, a collective occasion or a contest between poets. The catalogue entry concerns the Lebanese practice, while the word has related histories elsewhere. A successful line depends not only on rhyme but on timing, wit, allusion and the audience's recognition. The Lebanese tradition belongs to a wider history of Arabic vernacular poetic expression, but its particular performance institutions and repertories developed locally over time. Family transmission, public gatherings and the reputations of individual poets helped establish recognizable approaches. Modern recording and broadcast extended the public, preserving specific encounters and allowing lines to circulate beyond their first occasion. The geography represents familiarity and participation, not the locations of poet-union offices. Related genres

Levantine song, dabke and other festive practices share occasions and musical resources without becoming zajal. Related vernacular poetic forms elsewhere in Arabic-speaking regions require their own local histories. A comparison with rap battle can orient a newcomer to verbal contest, but it is not a technical definition or evidence of direct descent. Following melody, meter, response and occasion together makes the Lebanese practice intelligible on its own terms and shows how an oral art can remain adaptable without losing a recognizable cultural identity.
