Dhaanto
Summary
Dhaanto is a Somali sung poetic and dance form with a distinct identity within the Horn’s many verbal-musical genres. Community performance and later popular adaptations connect rural social practice with towns and migrant publics. It is one named repertoire, rather than a synonym for every Somali dance or song. [1] [2]
Contemporary and trending
Musicians have brought Dhaanto resources into changing amplified and transnational settings. Aar Maanta’s interview describes his return to Jigjiga and the social importance of local dance. His account demonstrates deliberate creative engagement with community practice; its 2014 language of revival should not be treated as a measured description of the genre’s 2026 standing. [3]
History
John William Johnson’s 1972 study distinguishes Dhaanto from Wiglo, Hirwo and Belwo within a family of smaller poetic genres. Afrax’s later research addresses continuity and innovation as Somali poetry and theater moved through post-independence institutions. These accounts support a differentiated history rather than a single all-Somali folk category. [1] [2]
Musical characteristics
Poetic organization, sung delivery and coordinated dance distinguish the form. Musical adaptation can change accompaniment without eliminating the social and metrical relationships recognized by participants. The particular pattern should not be inferred simply from a generic pentatonic scale or an asserted resemblance to a foreign genre. [1] [3]
Geography and communities
Ethiopia’s Somali Region, including Jigjiga and connected communities, supplies a strong documented landscape. Northern and adjoining Somali publics participate through community and urban connections, with wider Horn and migrant circulation. The fields describe connected practice without treating disputed origin accounts as exclusive ownership or political boundaries. [3] [2]
Artists
Aar Maanta is a documented contemporary interpreter whose own account relates his work to Jigjiga’s dance practice. Local singers and dancers remain central to the form’s social life; the repertoire cannot be adequately represented by one touring artist. [3]

Related genres
Qaraami belongs to a different modern-song history, and Buraanbur is a distinct women’s poetic/performance field. Shared language and overlapping social occasions do not erase differences in form, authorship and delivery. [2] [4]
