Summary

Malhun is a Moroccan poetic and musical art in which a substantial sung text and its performance are central. Dialectal Arabic poetry, and in some repertoires Hebrew, can address affection, moral reflection, daily pleasure, imagined travel and public events. The category is not defined simply by an old instrument or a slow tempo. Singer, musicians, poet, textual memory and audience knowledge work together to give a poem social life. UNESCO recognition in 2023 emphasized a collective living art rather than a closed anthology. A shorter concert selection may reveal part of a long poem without reproducing every aspect of a familiar gathering. The genre's cultural identity therefore includes both repertory knowledge and the practical work of making words compelling to people who hear them in the present.

History

The art developed within Moroccan social worlds including urban craft and working communities, with poets and singers transmitting texts through personal and collective networks. Different cities and regions contributed repertories and stylistic histories. Writing and publication later joined oral learning, while associations and public institutions added new routes of transmission. This history is not a clean passage from illiterate folk culture to educated art music. Verbal sophistication, memory and interpretation already belonged to the practice, and institutions preserve only part of the knowledge that a musician acquires through participation. [1]

Related genres

Andalusi-associated music, Moroccan chaabi and other poetic-song forms offer close comparison without being interchangeable. Malhun poetry has also traveled into neighboring musical settings, including Algerian chaabi repertoires. The word can therefore refer to a textual resource as well as a specifically organized Moroccan performance art. Keeping those dimensions distinct makes exchange more intelligible. A listener can follow how one poem is reshaped by a new ensemble or audience while still recognizing the particular tradition through which it was learned and given public authority. [59]
