Doina is a family of Romanian lyrical, improvisatory song and related instrumental expression. A performer shapes phrases with considerable freedom, making the unfolding interpretation central rather than following one fixed verse-and-beat formula. Regional singers and instrumentalists documented by Romanian archives are the strongest route into local differences. Related genres

Doina relates to other Romanian lyrical, narrative and instrumental traditions without being interchangeable with all of them. Bocet, for example, has a different relationship to lament and occasion. Klezmer musicians use a related doina category within their own historical performance world, where its function and instrumental language deserve separate attention.
