Calcinha Preta
Summary
Calcinha Preta is a band from Aracaju, Sergipe, known for dramatic romantic Forró eletrônico. Its combination of powerful voices, electric instruments and emotionally direct songs is a major strand of Contemporary Forró.[1]
History
The band established its recorded career during the 1990s and developed an extensive live and audiovisual catalogue. National television exposure widened its audience; 'Você Não Vale Nada', written by Dorgival Dantas, became especially visible through the television drama Caminho das Índias.[1][2]
Music and repertoire
Romantic intensity, alternating or combined lead voices and amplified arrangements distinguish this approach from the compact voice-and-keyboard model associated with early pisadinha. Adaptations and reworkings of other popular songs also form part of the repertoire. The persistence of these recordings as forró das antigas does not turn them into acoustic pé-de-serra: 'old' here identifies a remembered band era.
Members and collaborators
Daniel Diau, Silvânia Aquino and Paulinha Abelha are among the important voices in the band's history. Its personnel have changed, so a historical lineup should not be presented as current membership. 'Você Não Vale Nada' also illustrates the circulation of songs between an individual composer and a band's distinctive interpretation.[1]
