ABBA
Summary
ABBA is the Swedish pop group of Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Close vocal blending, memorable melodies and detailed studio production gave its recordings a lasting international audience.[1]
History
Andersson and Ulvaeus began writing together in the 1960s, bringing experience from the Hep Stars and Hootenanny Singers. Fältskog and Lyngstad already had performing careers before the quartet developed. 'Waterloo' brought an international breakthrough in 1974. The later Mamma Mia! musical and film carried the songs into new theatrical settings.[1][2]
Music and repertoire
Jim Farber's Hall of Fame essay emphasizes the density of the group's harmonies and instrumental layers, as well as the sophistication behind its immediately singable songs. Disco dance appeal and more reflective songwriting coexist in the repertoire. 'Dancing Queen', 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' and 'Money, Money, Money' appear on Arrival (1976).[3][4]

Members and collaborators
Andersson and Ulvaeus developed the songwriting partnership; Fältskog and Lyngstad supplied contrasting but closely integrated lead and harmony voices. Engineer Michael B. Tretow was an important studio collaborator. The four members' earlier musical experiences helped make the quartet more than a single lead singer with accompaniment.[1][3]
