Summary

African Brothers International Band is the Ghanaian highlife ensemble associated with Nana Ampadu. Its guitar-band music and narrative songs belong to Ghana's popular and concert-party traditions. The name here refers to that Ghanaian ensemble.[1]

History

The band's public inauguration took place at Park Cinema in Adabraka, Accra, in September 1963. Its formation drew on musicians and instruments assembled through a local network. The choice of name expressed support for African unity in the era of Kwame Nkrumah. Performances included beer bars, weddings and funerals before wider recording recognition.[1]

Music and repertoire

A front line of interlocking guitars supported Ampadu's extended stories and metaphorical lyrics. Reggae and rock elements entered that highlife setting. The 1967 success 'Ebi Te Yie' carried a social and political resonance beyond entertainment; 'Agyanka Dabere' and 'Suminaso Ntonko' belong to the band's early recording history.[2]

Members and collaborators

Ampadu became the best-known singer and songwriter. Early participants included Eddie Donkor, Rover Amo Ampadu, Kwame Anim, Yaw Asante and Kwadwo Ofori. The history credits Ofori with an early leadership role, recognizing that the group's organization was broader than its later association with one frontman.[1]
