Merskawi
Summary
Merskawi is a Libyan popular-song field with important Benghazi/Barqa and southern connections. The name also covers disputed boundaries: some practitioners distinguish a particular southern repertoire from the wider popular music marketed under the label. [1]
Contemporary and trending
A 2023 account describes changing electronic arrangements and broad social circulation. Composer Masouda al-Qarsh’s 2025 interview confirms continuing discussion among Libyan musicians about the form and its critics. Neither praise for innovation nor nostalgic complaints about decline settle the musical definition by themselves. [2] [3]
History
Murzuq is often invoked in origin accounts. A 2013 practitioner/researcher discussion also identifies living southern practice in Hun, Ghat and Sabha, while explaining Benghazi’s important role in absorption and wider recognition. This supports several connected landscapes rather than either a sole origin pin or an exclusively coastal history. [1]
Musical characteristics
Accounts describe vocal song with locally meaningful poetic and melodic conventions, and combinations of wind instruments and percussion. Mawwal introductions and a faster tabrwila ending figure in some descriptions, but practitioners disagree about whether these are defining components. Modern keyboards and other instruments extend rather than standardize the whole field. [1] [2]
Geography and communities
Benghazi and connected Barqa communities receive a strong eastern field. Southern practice has its own Fezzan field, and western coastal circulation is lower. Libyan cultural documentation places the music in weddings and celebrations nationally; that reach does not mean equal intensity across the desert or every coastal repertoire. [4]
Artists
Ali al-Sha’aliya, Mohamed Sidqi and Shadi al-Jabal belong to the historical popular-song account, with attribution of particular music as Merskawi sometimes contested. Mohamed Marshan is an important practitioner voice in that debate. These names identify a history, not a list of currently active performers. [1]

Related genres
Malouf/Andalusi traditions, Arabic pop and rap contribute to Libya’s wider musical landscape. Comparative accounts sometimes liken Merskawi’s changing social voice to Raï; that analogy should not substitute for its particular Libyan repertories and institutions. [5]
