Summary

Laïkó is a broad Greek popular-song world that developed through twentieth-century urban life, recording and entertainment. The word can be used in different ways, so the catalogue emphasizes the postwar song tradition and its continuing descendants rather than every popular recording in Greek. Strong vocal interpretation, memorable melody and the relationship between personal experience and public feeling are central. History

Rebetiko and other urban musical worlds contributed musicians, instruments and songs to postwar popular music.
