Related genres

Himene ruau and other Polynesian choral forms share cultural and historical connections while organising voices differently. Tahitian dance and drumming have their own performance languages; a festival programme can contain both without making every item tarava. Tongan and Samoan choral traditions also developed through local encounters with hymnody but are not interchangeable regional versions of one imported form. Contemporary Pacific pop may draw on choral textures. The most useful discovery route follows the particular island tradition, vocal roles and song meaning before applying a broad oceanic label.
