Summary

Moutya is a Seychellois Creole music-and-dance practice in which drumming, responsive singing and bodily movement express social experience and cultural memory. Its history is closely tied to African enslavement and the creation of community under unequal conditions. The practice is more than a stage dance accompanying a beat: words, occasion, instrument preparation and participation give it meaning. Its cultural identity is specifically Seychellois, even while related Indian Ocean traditions provide important comparisons.
